Quite famous online, Nakatanidou is the small snacks shop in Nara that does hourly public mochi poundings. Speaking with the staff, they say that the mochi poundings are generally only done when the previous batch is almost sold out, however it seems that this happens more or less roughly every hour. Watch the mochi pounding process and see them feed the warm, soft rice into their machine and fresh delicious mochi come out!
I highly recommend eating at least 1 straight away if you’re able to get there when it’s freshly made, because the warmth and softness is unparalleled. Even as a not-so-big-fan of red bean, I absolutely loved the mochi just because of how fresh, warm and smooth it was. I liked it enough that I proceeded to buy a to-go pack of 4 more to eat on the train ride home.
